At the heart of Help Me Grow are home visits, which experts say raise awareness and introduce support networks to parents who feel socially isolated and overburdened, often by poverty.

Such visits also are common in higher-income households if a child there needs early intervention.

“The strength of the program is home visiting … in that child’s natural environment,” said Shancie Jenkins, an Ohio Department of Health chief who oversees the Help Me Grow program.

Program professionals, most of whom are employed at the county level, tailor an evidence-based curriculum to fit each family’s situation, Jenkins said.
